Types of Primary Lymphedema

Congenital lymphedema: Present at birth

Secondary Lymphedema: The Most Common Form After Cancer Treatment

Secondary lymphedema develops when a previously healthy lymphatic system becomes damaged or obstructed. It is most common among cancer survivors.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)

What Is Lipedema? Understanding the Difference

Lipedema is a chronic, hormonal, and hereditary fat-distribution disorder. Often misdiagnosed as obesity or lymphedema.

Common Signs of Lipedema

Painful fat accumulation
Easy bruising
Symmetrical swelling in the legs or arms

Lipedema vs. Lymphedema: Key Differences

Characteristics of Lipedema

Location: Both legs (sometimes arms); feet and hands usually spared
Pain: Fat tissue is painful and tender
Bruising: Occurs easily
Symmetry: Always affects both limbs equally
Cause: Strongly linked to hormonal changes and genetics

Characteristics of Lymphedema

Location: Often one limb; commonly includes hands or feet
Pain: Feels heavy or tight rather than painful
Bruising: Not common
Symmetry: Frequently affects one side
Cause: Damage or blockage in lymphatic system due to cancer, surgery, infection, or CVI

Sometimes, patients may develop lipo-lymphedema, involving both disorders.
